The fellowship program provides sports medicine rotations for residents:

A rotation provides the resident with a personal “view” of our program for fellowship consideration.

•  We also welcome those residents who are simply interested in strengthening their musculoskeletal skills.

Sports medicine rotations are typically offered within the fellowship program during September through April. Rotations are designed to give the resident experience in athletic injury diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation, and an overview of the role of exercise in health exercise prescription for healthy and diseased individuals. The fellowship program curriculum, the fellows and the sports medicine teaching faculty provide the foundation for our medical rotations.

Rotation Goals:

• Learn to perform an effective sports injury/illness history and focused exam and from that information, form a differential diagnosis • Develop a comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation plan • Learn basic exercise physiology as it relates to physical training and sports participation • Become familiar with common medical problems associated with sports and exercise • Develop an exercise prescription for healthy exercisers • Develop an understanding of the role of the primary care physician as a team physician and his/her role with the sports medicine team (athlete, athletic trainer, physician consultants) • Recognize the breadth of sports medicine as practiced by the primary care physician.

Rotation Process:

•   These educational experiences are gained through working with sports medicine faculty and fellows, athletic trainers and physical therapists in sports medicine ambulatory clinics, college and high school training rooms, and  (seasonal) sideline experience.

•   A series of didactic presentations complete the experience.
